Why Climb With Us

Born at the
Base of Kilimanjaro

We are not a booking platform. We are guides who grew up between Moshi and the mountain — men and women who know every weather pattern, every hidden campsite view and every technique to help you reach Uhuru Peak safely and joyfully.

Our KPAP-certified operation pays porters a fair wage, monitors every climber's oxygen levels daily and runs a guide-to-climber ratio that most operators won't match.

What Sets Us Apart

Your Safety & Success Is Our Mission

Daily Pulse Oximetry
Every guide carries a pulse oximeter. We monitor your blood-oxygen saturation each morning and evening to catch altitude symptoms before they become dangerous.
KPAP-Certified Porters
We are fully compliant with the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project — fair wages, proper gear, maximum load limits and porter welfare you can verify.
Small Groups, Max Attention
We cap group sizes intentionally. A guide who knows your name, your pace and your goals produces far better results than a herded group of 20.
Wilderness First Aid Trained
All lead guides hold Wilderness First Responder certifications. We carry supplemental oxygen, a stretcher, an emergency descent plan and evacuation insurance on every climb.
Pre-Trip Briefing & Training Plan
Every booking includes a personal pre-trip call with your guide, a tailored 12-week fitness plan and detailed gear consultation so you arrive ready — not guessing.
Transparent, All-In Pricing
No hidden fees. Our price includes park fees, rescue fees, crew tips guidance, camping gear, all meals and airport transfers. What you see is what you pay.

"

What a life-changing experience. The support of my guide Aloyce was incredible — his team of porters made my whole trip an experience I will never forget. I would recommend anyone thinking of climbing Kilimanjaro to give Above The Rim Tours a call. They are the real deal.

I was so nervous about altitude sickness. The guides took my O2 levels every single morning and evening, explained every reading and adjusted our pace perfectly. I summited and cried. Worth every penny — and then some.

We did the 8-day Lemosho as a group of four friends from the UK. The food on the mountain was genuinely spectacular — we couldn't believe it. ATR looked after us like family. Three of us went back the following year for a safari.

Got Questions?

Everything You Need
to Know

The Lemosho Route (7–8 days) is the best for most climbers due to its high success rate (95–97%), stunning scenery across five ecological zones and the most gradual acclimatisation profile. The Machame Route is popular for experienced hikers who want dramatic landscapes. For those wanting hut accommodation, Marangu (5–6 days) is the right choice. Our guides are happy to help you match the route to your fitness and goals — just contact us.
Our prices start from USD 1,650 per person for the Marangu Route (5 days) and go up to USD 2,800+ for the Lemosho 8-Day or Northern Circuit routes. All prices are fully inclusive — park fees, rescue fees, KPAP-certified guides and porters, all meals on the mountain, camping gear, mattresses, airport transfer and pre-climb hotel. Contact us for a personalised quote including group discounts.
No technical experience is needed — Kilimanjaro is a trekking mountain, not a technical climb. There are no ropes, crampons or ice axes required on the standard routes. What matters is cardiovascular fitness (being able to walk 5–8 hours per day), a positive mindset and following your guide's pace. We provide a personalised 12-week training programme on booking.
The two main dry seasons are January–March (warm, clear skies, fewer crowds) and June–October (the peak season, coldest but driest). Both are excellent. December is also surprisingly good with warm temperatures and improving conditions. April–May (long rains) and November (short rains) should be avoided where possible, though our guides climb year-round.
Altitude illness prevention is at the core of everything we do. Our approach: (1) Choose the right route — longer routes with better acclimatisation profiles dramatically reduce AMS risk; (2) Daily pulse oximetry — every guide carries an oximeter and takes readings each morning and evening; (3) Pole pole — our Swahili philosophy of "slowly slowly" is not a slogan but a medical protocol; (4) Supplemental oxygen carried at all times; (5) We carry Diamox for emergencies. We also brief every climber on symptom recognition before departure.
Key items: a -15°C sleeping bag, waterproof hiking boots (broken in!), insulated down jacket, waterproof shell jacket and trousers, warm base layers (merino recommended), trekking poles, headtorch and sun protection. We provide a full detailed gear list on booking and can arrange quality gear hire from Moshi for items you don't own. We check all climbers' gear before departure.
Absolutely — and we strongly recommend it. A "Summit, Safari & Beach" combo is Tanzania at its finest. We handle all the internal logistics: transfer from the Kili gate to Arusha, safari vehicle waiting, then onward to Zanzibar. Most people add 3–5 days of safari and 4–7 nights in Zanzibar. Contact us for a fully customised itinerary.
