Built for You.

Above The Rim Tours was founded by a guide who started as a Kilimanjaro porter, summited the mountain more times than he can count, and spent years guiding both wildlife safaris and international trekkers before building something of his own.

Our Origin Story

A Porter Who
Became a Founder

"I learned this mountain from the bottom up — literally. My first steps on Kilimanjaro were carrying 20 kilos on my back so someone else could reach the top."

Long before Above The Rim Tours existed, our founder was a porter on Kilimanjaro — one of thousands of unsung mountain workers who make every summit possible. He carried loads, set up tents, and watched guide after guide lead foreign visitors to Uhuru Peak. He took notes. He studied. He asked questions.

Over years of hard work, he earned his guiding certification and began leading climbers himself. He then expanded into Tanzania's wildlife circuits — working with both local operators and international companies across the Northern Circuit safaris, learning every track in Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti.

When he finally launched Above The Rim Tours, he built it around a single principle: the best Tanzania experience comes from people who actually live here. Not a booking platform. Not a reseller. A team of guides who know this land intimately and have earned every credential the hard way.

The Journey

From Porter to Founder
Every Step on the Mountain

Step One

The First Steps — Life as a Kilimanjaro Porter

Starting at the bottom — carrying equipment, tents and supplies up the slopes of Kilimanjaro. The hardest and most formative years: learning the mountain's moods, altitudes and ecosystems first-hand.

Kilimanjaro Porter
Step Two

Earning the Guide Certificate — Leading Climbers to Uhuru Peak

After years of study and mountain experience, earning the KINAPA guide certification and leading his first expeditions. Each summit was proof that deep local knowledge translates directly into client success.

Certified Kilimanjaro Guide
Step Three

Into the Wild — Becoming a Safari Guide

Expanding beyond Kilimanjaro into Tanzania's national parks. Years guiding game drives across Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara — building encyclopaedic wildlife knowledge that only comes from thousands of hours in the bush.

Working With the Best — Local & International Companies

Guiding for both established Tanzanian operators and international tour companies. Learning what world-class service looks like, what clients from every corner of the globe expect — and where the gaps were.

What We Stand For

More Than a Tour.
A Responsibility.

We built this company around values that were shaped on the mountain and in the bush — not in a boardroom.

Local Ownership & Fair Wages

100% Tanzanian-owned. Every porter, cook and guide is paid fairly and treated with dignity. We follow KPAP porter welfare standards — because the mountain crews are the heartbeat of every expedition.

Eco-Tourism First

We operate with minimum environmental impact. Waste management on every trek, Leave No Trace principles in the parks, and a genuine commitment to protecting the landscapes that make Tanzania extraordinary.

Uncompromising Safety

Pulse oximetry monitoring twice daily on Kilimanjaro, emergency oxygen on every trek, first aid-certified crew, and 24/7 base team communication. We have never compromised safety to keep a schedule.

Community Reinvestment

A portion of every booking goes back into the communities around Kilimanjaro and the safari parks. When you travel with us, your money employs local families and helps build a sustainable future for Tanzania's wild places.

Radical Transparency

No hidden fees. No surprise add-ons. Everything in your quote is exactly what you'll pay. We learned early that trust is built one honest conversation at a time.

Genuine Care for Summits

Our 95% summit rate isn't a marketing number — it's the result of guides who personally want every client to stand on Uhuru Peak. We don't rush itineraries or cut acclimatisation days to save cost.

We are a Responsible Eco-Tour Operator

Above The Rim Tours operates under Tanzania's eco-tourism principles. We are TALA licensed, follow KPAP porter welfare standards, and are committed to carbon-conscious operations across all our tours.

Thank you to everyone at Above the Rim Tours for an amazing Safari. Despite being short on time you managed to make sure we saw the best of the best — Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti. William was an amazing guide whose experience and instinct meant we saw many rare sightings. Truly world-class.

Reached Uhuru Peak on day 7 of the Lemosho Route. The guides monitored our oxygen levels every single day. When one of our group showed early altitude sickness signs on day 5, they adjusted pace — and she still summited. That care and professionalism is what makes this company stand apart from every other operator on the mountain.
