Why Zanzibar

Sand, Spice
& Stone Town

Zanzibar is three destinations in one — an ancient Swahili city, a world-class diving and snorkelling destination, and some of the Indian Ocean's most beautiful beaches. Very few places on Earth pack this much diversity into a single island.

We arrange everything end-to-end: hotels, dhow cruises, spice farm guides, diving instructors and cultural walking tours — all through local contacts who give our guests access that independent travellers simply don't get.

UNESCO World Heritage

Stone Town —
A Living City

Stone Town is not a museum. It is a living, breathing Swahili city where the call to prayer echoes through coral-stone alleys, spice merchants work from doorways carved 300 years ago and fishermen still haul catches to the same seafront market as their great-grandfathers.

🚪
Carved Brass Doors
Each carved wooden door tells the story of the family that commissioned it — wealth, profession and origin encoded in the design. Our guides translate every detail.
🕌
Mosques, Temples & Churches
Stone Town has 51 mosques, several Hindu temples and a Catholic cathedral — all within walking distance. The fusion of cultures is unmatched anywhere in East Africa.
🌙
Forodhani Night Market
Every evening the waterfront transforms into a street food paradise — fresh Zanzibar pizza, sugarcane juice, grilled seafood and samosas under the baobab trees.

Indian Ocean Adventures

Life Below
the Surface

Zanzibar's Indian Ocean waters are some of the warmest and most biodiverse on the continent. Visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres. Whether you've never snorkelled or hold a dive master certificate — there is something extraordinary waiting beneath the surface.

🐠
Mnemba Atoll Snorkelling
Tanzania's premier snorkelling site — a protected atoll ringed with healthy coral gardens, sea turtles, moray eels and hundreds of tropical fish species. No experience needed.
🐢
Prison Island Sea Turtles
A short dhow ride from Stone Town to a small island where giant Aldabra tortoises roam freely and green turtles nest on the beach. A magical hour for all ages.
🐬
Wild Spinner Dolphins
Kizimkazi village in the south hosts resident pods of wild spinner and bottlenose dolphins. Early morning boat trips give you the best chance of swimming alongside them in the open water.

When to Go

Best Time to Visit Zanzibar

Zanzibar has two distinct dry seasons and two rainy seasons. Knowing which is which means the difference between perfect beach days and frustrated clouds.

☀️🌊
June – October
Peak Dry Season
The long dry season. Warm (26–28°C), sunny, calm seas. Best for snorkelling, diving and beach. Busiest and slightly pricier.
🌤️🐬
Dec – February
Short Dry Season
Hot and sunny (28–32°C). Excellent for beach and ocean. Good dolphin sightings. Fewer crowds than June–October.
⛅🌺
November
Short Rains
Brief afternoon showers — often clears by midday. Lower prices, lush vegetation, quieter beaches. A good-value option.
🌧️⚠️
March – May
Long Rains — Avoid
Heavy daily rainfall and rough seas make beach activities difficult. Some hotels close. Not recommended for most travellers.

🌊 Combining with Safari?

The safari dry season (June–October) lines up perfectly with the best Zanzibar beach conditions. A Tanzania combo itinerary in July–September is as good as travel gets anywhere on Earth.

Real Stories

Voices from the Spice Island

"

We chose Above The Rim for our honeymoon in Zanzibar and it was absolutely perfect. Every detail was thought through — the spice tour, the dhow sunset cruise, the beach villa. It felt personal, never touristy. We came back for Kilimanjaro the following year.

The spice farm was a complete surprise — I expected a tourist trap and got an hour with a local farmer who knew the history of every plant. Stone Town at night with our guide was magical. The Forodhani market food alone was worth the trip.

Swimming with the dolphins was one of those rare moments where you think — this is why I travel. They came right up to us, completely wild and completely unafraid. The snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll afterwards was world-class. An extraordinary day organised flawlessly.

Got Questions?

Zanzibar Answered

The two dry seasons are the best times: June–October (the long dry season — warm, sunny and ideal for beach and diving) and December–February (the short dry season — hot and excellent for ocean activities with slightly fewer tourists). March–May is the long rainy season and best avoided. November brings short afternoon showers but is otherwise manageable and offers good value. If you're combining with a Serengeti safari, June–October aligns perfectly with both the beach and the Great Migration.
We recommend a minimum of 5 days to do Zanzibar justice — enough for Stone Town, a spice farm, a dolphin or snorkelling excursion and 2 proper beach days. Our 3-day package is ideal as an add-on to a safari where time is limited. Our 7-day romantic package is designed for couples who want to slow completely down. Tell us what you want to feel at the end of the trip — we'll match the right number of days.
Nungwi (north) is our most-recommended for most travellers — calm, clear water year-round, great sunsets, varied restaurants and a lively beach bar scene. Kendwa (right next to Nungwi) is quieter and slightly more private. Paje (east coast) is perfect for kitesurfing, budget travellers and anyone who prefers a windier, cooler, quieter atmosphere. We book hotels at all three and can recommend the right fit based on your vibe.
Yes — Kizimkazi village on Zanzibar's southwest coast is home to resident pods of wild spinner and bottlenose dolphins. Early morning boat trips (departing around 6:30am) give the best chance of encountering them in calm, clear water. It is a genuinely wild experience — the dolphins are not fed or trained. On good days you can snorkel alongside them in open water. Our Beach Bliss & Dolphin Adventure package includes this trip as a highlight.
Absolutely. Zanzibar is one of the best family beach destinations in East Africa. The calm, shallow water at Nungwi is safe for young swimmers. The spice farm is a wonderful hands-on learning experience for children. The dolphin trip and Prison Island turtle visit are universally beloved by kids. We adjust the pace and programme for families and work with family-friendly hotels that have pools, shaded beach areas and children's facilities.
This is our most popular combined itinerary. The classic sequence: Kilimanjaro climb (starting in Moshi, 6–8 days) → transfer to Arusha → Serengeti safari (3–6 days) → internal flight to Zanzibar → beach recovery (5–7 days). We handle every internal transfer, flight booking and hotel connection as one seamless trip. Most guests spend 15–21 days in total. Tell us your dates and we'll send a full combined itinerary with pricing.
Stone Town is a predominantly Muslim community and cultural sensitivity is important. Dress modestly when walking the streets (cover shoulders and knees outside beach areas). Alcohol is widely available in hotels and restaurants but drinking in public is not appropriate. Friday is the main day of prayer. Our guides know the neighbourhood intimately — they'll show you the slave market history, the best local food spots and the hidden rooftop cafés that tourists who go alone never find. The guided experience is significantly richer than wandering independently.
