Why Safari With Us

Guides Who Were
Born in the Bush

Our safari guides didn't study Tanzania in a classroom — they grew up here. They know the exact bend in the Grumeti River where the crocodiles wait, the kopje in the central Serengeti where lions den in dry season, the flamingo migration timing at Lake Manyara that most guides miss entirely.

Every vehicle is private or small-group. Every itinerary is built around where the wildlife actually is on the dates you travel — not a fixed circuit repeated year-round.

Annual Event

The Great Migration

1.5 million wildebeest. 250,000 zebra. The largest movement of animals on Earth — following the rains in a continuous clockwise loop through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem.

January – March
Calving season in the Southern Serengeti. 8,000 calves born per day. Predator action at its peak — cheetah, lion and hyena everywhere.
April – May
Herds move northwest through the Western Corridor. Green season — fewer tourists, lush landscapes, good bird watching.
June – July
The herds reach the Grumeti River crossings. First dramatic croc encounters begin. Northern Serengeti starts filling up.
August – October
Peak Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti. The iconic scenes — thousands of wildebeest plunging into croc-filled waters. The reason most people come to Tanzania.
November – December
Herds return south through the central Serengeti. Short rains begin, grass greens up. Excellent game viewing, fewer crowds.

What Makes Us Different

Why Safari Guests Come Back

Private Vehicles — Always
You never share a vehicle with strangers. Your guide goes where the animals are, stays as long as you want, and doesn't follow a fixed route dictated by other passengers.
Guides Who Live the Safari
Our guides spend their rest days at the parks — voluntarily. They track leopards for fun. They know the guides at every camp and share intelligence on recent sightings before you even leave the lodge.
Real-Time Wildlife Intelligence
We coordinate with ranger posts and partner guides daily. On the morning of your game drive we know where the pride was at dawn and where they're likely to be by midday.
Flexible Itineraries
We watch the weather and the wildlife patterns. If the migration crosses a week early, we adjust your game drive positions accordingly — no rigid schedules.
Transparent, Itemised Pricing
Every quote shows exactly what you're paying for: park fees, accommodation grade, meals, guide, vehicle. You can compare and you'll see we're competitive because we don't pad the numbers.
Verified 5-Star Reviews
Every review on TripAdvisor and Google is genuine — we never incentivise reviews. Our reputation was built game drive by game drive, and guests keep coming back with their families.

Real Stories

Voices from the Serengeti

"

Thank you to everyone at Above The Rim Tours for an amazing safari. Despite being short on time you ensured we saw the very best — Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti. William was an outstanding guide whose expertise and passion for wildlife made every moment unforgettable.

5-Day Big Five Safari
"

We saw all of the Big Five in the first two days. Our guide Baraka knew exactly where to position us for the leopard sighting — he'd been tracking her for two days before we even arrived. That's the level of preparation that separates ATR from every other operator we've used.

We brought our two kids (8 and 11) on the 4-day Wild Wonders safari and they're still talking about it six months later. Our guide turned every sighting into a story. The food was unbelievably good. We've already booked to come back for Kilimanjaro next year.

Got Questions?

Safari Questions,
Answered Honestly

The dry season (June–October) is the classic safari season — clear skies, sparse vegetation, animals concentrating around water sources and the dramatic Mara River crossings at their peak in July–September. January–March is excellent for calving season with intense predator action and fewer tourists. Green season (April–May) offers budget prices, lush scenery and still-great game viewing — we'll always give you an honest assessment of what each month delivers for your specific itinerary.
Our packages start from USD 650 per person for a 3-day safari (camping) up to USD 2,400+ for a 6-day lodge-based expedition. All prices are fully all-inclusive — park fees, accommodation, all meals, private vehicle, guide and airport transfers. Group discounts apply for 4+ people. Contact us for a personalised quote; we respond within 24 hours.
The Great Wildebeest Migration is the largest overland animal movement on Earth — 1.5 million wildebeest and 250,000 zebras moving in a continuous loop through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. The most dramatic scenes are the Mara River crossings (July–September) in the northern Serengeti. Calving season (January–March) in the southern Serengeti is equally spectacular with thousands of newborns attracting every predator in the region. There is exciting wildlife year-round — the migration is always somewhere in the ecosystem.
Our honest recommendation: 4 days minimum if you want the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. 3-day safaris skip the Serengeti or rush it — doable but not ideal. 5–6 days lets you add Tarangire and Lake Manyara for a complete northern circuit. For the Great Migration with river crossing action, plan 7–8 days based in the northern Serengeti. Quality over quantity — a 5-day focused safari beats a rushed 8-day circuit every time.
Tanzania is one of Africa's most stable and welcoming destinations. The national parks are well managed and access roads are improving year on year. Our vehicles are maintained to a high standard, our guides carry first-aid equipment and emergency contacts, and we brief every guest on sensible precautions. Yellow fever vaccination is required and we provide a full health and travel checklist on booking.
Absolutely — and we make it seamless. Our most popular combination is Kilimanjaro + Safari + Zanzibar (the "Summit, Safari & Beach" package). We handle all internal transfers, vehicle handoffs and timing. Most people do Kilimanjaro first (arriving in Moshi), then transfer to Arusha for the safari, then fly to Zanzibar. We also offer Safari + Zanzibar as a standalone combo. Tell us your dates and we'll build the full itinerary.
Key items: neutral-coloured clothing (khaki, olive, beige — no bright colours or camouflage), layers for cool mornings, a wide-brim hat, high-SPF sunscreen, quality binoculars, a camera with zoom lens, and closed-toe shoes for bush walks. Insect repellent with DEET and antimalarials are essential. We send a comprehensive packing list with every booking. Luggage should be soft-sided if possible — 4×4 vehicles have limited boot space.
